
Zinnie Harris’ strongly feminist adaptation of The Duchess draws the themes of the play firmly into the 21st Century. As tension mounts, Bosola, employed the brothers to spy on the Duchess, grapples with right and wrong, and ultimately fails to understand this until it is too late. The tragedy is centred around a wealthy widow, the play’s titular character, who secretly marries her steward – much to the upset of her two, very controlling brothers. The play was first performed in 1614 – it’s really old, although this adaptation doesn’t feel it at all.
